Hey Y’all!
Sunday IS comin’!!! And it is no normal Sunday! It’s Mother’s Day….. a day that in its modern form was established by Anna Jarvis in the early 20th century to honor her mother and other mothers. The first official Mother’s Day was celebrated in 1908, and it became a national holiday in 1914. I remember having to go into the yard on Mother’s Day Sunday before church to find red roses (then white when my grandmas passed away.) We always made little gifts at school for our mothers = I can still see this little pottery bowl that sat on the kitchen counter for years. I love you, Mama! Thank you for being my mom. When I had children, I remember getting those same little bowls myself. I also remember the year Jim thought he would be “cute” so he gave me a broom and dustpan for Mother’s Day. I think there was a bracelet or something in there also! But, you know, today I think I would prefer a really good broom to any bracelet!
Our service on Sunday will be wrapped all around the love of Mothers. (I am aware that some of us did not have mothers who knew how to show love. And there are some of us who are not biological mothers who often feel left out of the picture.) However, our celebration on Sunday is going to be a celebration of all kinds of mothers…… teachers who have touched our lives, kind aunts and grandmas who have loved us and made us love ourselves, a next door neighbor who stepped in and filled the space of Mom when our own was not able. The Bible is full of beautiful scriptures that remind us that God’s love and a mother’s love look a lot alike. Jesus kept talking about gathering his chicks under him like a mama hen. Can’t you feel that warmth? Can’t you feel that safety? I hope that you will have a wonderful Mother’s Day. And that you will feel the deep, deep love that is all around you. Your place is saved! Come and worship. And why not bring your mother…… or your children? We are singing 2 very familiar hymns for this special day – Be Thou My Vision and Amazing Grace. In between these two, we will learn a song in The Faith We Sing called A Mother Lined a Basket, all about the mothers of Moses and Samuel and Jesus. I think you will love it!
Look forward to seeing you there!
Love you all!
